Seeking the most famous Hungarian specialty, the Tokaji wine

Wine cellars in Eger

Over the course of the last centuries, the Valley of the Beautiful Woman, nowadays consisting of almost 200 cellars, has been related closely to the fame of Eger wines. The cellars were constructed in rhyolite tree, a volcanic material with excellent plasticity. At the border of Eger, hundreds of meters of rhyolite trees can be found. It also has the ability to keep the wine at a constant temperature of 10-15 °C over the whole course of the year. Moreover, the mosses living in the cellars, alongside the noble rot, are creating a unique atmosphere. Their pleasant aroma helps the maturation of the wine, and also to create the bouquet of it.

Shrine of Máriapócs

Máriapócs is an important place of pilgrimage of Eastern Hungary. Pilgrims are arriving from many directions: from the eastern part of Hungary, a region with a large group of Greek Catholics, but they are also coming from far away, even from abroad. While Father Dániel Papp was performing the Divine Liturgy in the small wooden church at 4 November 1696, a local ploughman, Mihály Eöry observed that both eyes of the Hodegetria Icon placed on the iconostasis were tearing.

The original tearing Hodegetria of Máriapócs was finally placed on an artistic altar under the 16th century marble baldachin of the southern aisle of the Stephansdom in Vienna.
